My in-laws are Cuban so Christmas was never that much of big deal for them (it was outlawed at one point I believe), but kings was a big deal. Recently we’ve started celebrating Kings Day with a traditional Cuban feast of roasted pork, rice & beans and plantains. We use it a way to honor my husbands cultural roots and live out our faith at the same time.
I cannot wait to cozy up in a blanket with a cuppa, some stale butter cookies, and read these lovely essays! Thank you for making the holiday season more meaningful. And much to look forward to!
Hey, just saw that you live and homeschool in Shennandoah, we are also a homeschooling family and love going there, we go to the national park and sometimes to Warrenton
It's really a wonderful place to live. Not convenient for shopping/culture but very convenient for nature and peace and living in contact with the earth.
That’s what we prefer, peace, nature, quiet, makes a huge difference. I love taking my son to lakes and ponds and just sitting with him and listening to the nature.
We always make a Galettes des Rois because we lived in France for years. At my son's French immersion school here in MN, we on the PTO sell them to the families, too. We also have the Wise Man (we only have one in our set so far : ) ) progressively make his way over to the rest of the party at Bethlehem.
Yes! The moving wise men are so fun. And the galette...I made two this year. The lamination came out the best it ever has...so flaky...and yummy...16 Tbsp of butter in each one, so it's good that it's a seasonal treat, not an everyday one!!
That's neat that the PTO sells them! We live in a rural area so there are no French bakeries around here. We'd have to drive to Northern VA to buy one and that is something I would like to avoid having to do!
I’ve made this amazing Galette des Rois:

I will take pleasure in exploring these resources! Thank you so much.
Oh my - that looks phenomenal!!
Yes my friend Gary is quite the foodie, with other recipes that may fit in liturgically for other seasons as well.
Wow! That's quite striking when cut open.

That sounds like such a rich celebration, Crystal! What fun.

That sounds lovely! Dip those cookies in your tea and enjoy! It's still Christmas!
Come back and tell us any thoughts you have!
What a rich and wonderful roundup! Well done, Sights + Seasons team, happy to be included.
Thank you, Jody! Thank you for contributing.

Wonderful! It's a beautiful place, isn't it?!
We love it, want to move closer to there in the future, currently in DC
